Planners Do Not Have Batteries

Let’s talk about planners. I’m talking about the academic planner, the tool that has the potential to be your student’s academic BFF – if they actually use it!

When I ask students “Do you use an academic planner?”, I chuckle when the response is “They don’t work for me.” Planners do not come with batteries or USB Ports. Planners only work when we work the planner. They need to learn how to “work the planner” so the planner can work for them.

So how do we plug in?

  1. Daily Check-in Routine: Encourage your child to review their planner at the same times each day—either in the morning, before school, or in the evening after dinner. This gets them into a habit of visualizing their day or week ahead. You can even make it a family routine, where everyone take a few minutes to look at their schedules together!

  2. Use the Planner During the School Day: Breaking news—all teachers do not incorporate the use of academic planners during instruction. Encourage your child to take a few minutes during the school day, either at the start of class or right after to jot down assignments, due dates or important things to remember in their planner. This will help them stay on top of tasks instead of calling you in the middle of the day begging you to bring the math assignment left on the kitchen counter!

  3. Lead by Example: If your child sees you using a planner, or calendar to stay organized, they’re more likely to follow suit. Whether it’s using a family calendar on the fridge or a digital one, show them how you stay on top ot task, and they’ll be more likely to mimic those habits.
