Improve Test Success with the Leitner System
Do you remember that overwhelming feeling of gloom when faced with the amount of information you needed to remember for an exam? Students are now in your shoes, especially as many college students prepare for semester finals. Studying can be simplified using flashcards and two boxes to boost retention and make learning more efficient—and fun.
The Leitner System, created by German science journalist Sebastian Leitner, is a powerful strategy for making difficult subjects manageable through spaced repetition.
Create Flashcards:
Write vocabulary or questions on one side and the definition or answers on the other side.
Label two boxes as Box 1 and Box 2.
2. Place Flashcards in Box 1:
All new flashcards start in Box 1.
3. Review Flaschards:
Regularly review the flashcards in Box 1. If you answer a flashcard correctly, move it to Box 2.
If answered incorrectly, the card goes back into Box 1.
Maintain Mastery:
Keep reviewing the flashcards each day. The goal is to transfer all cards from Box 1 to Box 2 through correct answers.
Once Box 1 is empty and Box 2 is full, the content is crushed— mastered—RETAINED!
