5 Questions To Ask Your Child Instead of “Do you have homework?”

We all do it—pick up our children from school and one of the first things we ask is, “Do you have homework?” When they shrug and say, “Nope!” our frustration builds and we think, “What kind of teacher doesn’t give homework?” 🤔

But here’s the thing—there are several reasons why teachers may not be assigning homework these days. Some can tell when parents are doing the work to earn their own grade, while others know that many students don’t have the right environment or support at home to complete it.

While there are pros and cons to homework, there are more helpful and engaging questions you can ask instead. Try these to get your child thinking about their own growth:

  1. "What did you learn today that you think you could practice more?"

    • Encourages reflection on areas that need improvement.

  2. "Is there a project or subject you'd like to spend a little extra time on?"

    • Promotes ownership of learning and reinforces that it doesn't end when the school day does.

  3. "What’s one thing you want to get better at in school this week?"

    • Helps set a short-term goal and gives a sense of progress.

  4. "Can we review something together that was challenging today?"

    • Offers support without pressure, building confidence and connection.

  5. "Is there a skill or topic you’re curious about that we can explore more at home?"

    • Fosters curiosity and independent learning beyond school expectations.

Encourage deeper conversations andsupport your child take more ownership of their learning and inspire them to want to make improvement! Of course, we want them to earn winning grades but we also want them to enjoy the journey of learning!
